Spindle Cove, nestled in a peaceful corner of Regency Era England, has long been known as “Spinster Cove,” due to its preponderance of unwed ladies of “delicate constitutions”—and that’s the fictional setting for a delightful historical romance series by USA Today bestselling author Tessa Dare. In A Lady by Midnight, a young woman searching for her family finds love unexpectedly with a handsome colonel—but the secrets of her heritage threaten to disrupt their romance…and their upcoming nuptials. Concerning the heart-soaring romantic fiction of Ms. Tessa Dare, fans of Lisa Kleypas and Eloisa James would do well to heed Julia Quinn’s admonitions and “prepare to fall in love!”

A Lady by Midnight is book three in the Spindle Cove series by Tessa Dare. I really enjoyed the depth in this book. Kate Taylor is a beautifully flawed individual living in Spindle Cove and teaching music lessons to its inhabitants. Kate’s temple is marred by a birthmark that most people shy away from. And though she is alone, she is drawn to the dark brooding officer who often sits at the back of the room nursing an ale and listening to her music lessons. Corporal Thorne is the perfect, silent hero. He first appears in book one and his character is spot on in this story. Silent, dark and handsome, he outwardly appears to loathe Kate Taylor. He often avoids speaking to her. But Thorne is a man of mystery and he knows more about Kate than she knows about herself. I think the way Dare transforms her characters is fascinating. I loved the push and pull between Kate and Thorne. There are quite a few steamy scenes per usual in a Dare story, and if that makes you feel uncomfortable try just reading the dialogue.  I recommend this book.
