For three long and lonely years, Tristan Trent, the Marquess of Hopkins, waited for his wife Elaina’s return. Eyewitnesses insist no one could have survived the storm that swept her overboard, but Tristan refuses to give up hope—even when he is trapped into a betrothal he doesn’t want and forced to declare Elaina dead.

Elaina Trent has no memories of her life before waking in Alderney surrounded by strangers, and three years of trying to recall an elusive history has left her life in limbo. Determined to have a future even though her past is gone, she accepts a marriage proposal and a promise for a new life. But when a man claiming to be her brother-in-law stumbles across her, Elaina has no choice except to end her engagement and return to a husband she no longer knows.

When Elaina and Tristan are finally reunited, she still cannot recall what they once shared. Can she begin anew with a gentleman she doesn’t even know and hope that love grows once again, or will they remain strangers forever?

The Forgotten Marquess is book one in The Other Trents series by Jane Charles. I can’t give it more than a 3 flower rating and here’s why. I have never read her previous series called The Tenacious Trents.  Since I’ve not read any of the Trent books, I found myself completely lost through most of the beginning of the book – the first nine or so chapters I was floundering. Why not just make this book 11 in the Tenacious Trent series? I think labeling this book first in a series implies that the reader doesn’t need knowledge of  previous stories or characters. If this book is meant to begin a new series then I shouldn’t have to go back and read anything else prior to this story. I finally threw in the towel at chapter 19 out of 34. I will probably go back and read The Tenacious Trents series when I have more time. In this story, Tristan Trent the Marquess of Hopkins has lost his wife Elaina at sea. For three years he waits for her return refusing to believe that she is dead. Once he finds her again, Elaina has amnesia. Can they make a life together when she has no memory of her one true love? Read it and find out, but first read The Tenacious Trents series. Otherwise you will be lost. Jane Charles is a good author. I have read Her Muse, Lord Patrick and loved it.
