“You broke my heart, destroyed every illusion I had. But somehow I can’t stop loving you.”
Before the Dawn by Candace Camp is a wonderful story set during World War II. I absolutely couldn’t put this book down. I was hesitant to read it at first. I have loved Camp’s regency romances. But this book held me captive. I loved the characters in the story. The relationship between Alyssa and Philippe is electric. When the Germans march into France, Philippe urges Alyssa to leave France for her safety. She refuses and insists that he come with her. But Philippe is more interested in preserving his business and so he is willing to work with the Nazis. Alyssa feels betrayed and devastated that she could have been so mistaken about her lover’s true character. There is heartache and hope in this story and fortunately a happy ending. I highly recommend it. I hope Camp writes more World War II stories.
