Lady Adele Prescott is dead. At least that’s what the whole of London society believes. After recovering from her injuries in secret, she knows she should remain in hiding. But nothing will keep her from taking a position as a maid in the home of the lord she believes murdered her family.
Christopher Underwood, former military man and amateur inventor, wants no part of society or his newly acquired title. He spends his time in seclusion hiding from the ghosts of his past. When he discovers his new maid bears a striking resemblance to the dead daughter of his former partner, a dangerous plan takes root in his mind. Secrets and lies may bind them, but only the truth will set them free.
***Author's This is a stand-alone Neo-Victorian romance with a heat rating of three. There is sex in this book as well as mystery and steampunk elements.***
Deceiving the Earl is a steampunk romance written by Kirsten Blacketer. It is a very well written romance and mystery story. When Lady Adele loses her family in a suspicious house fire, she must find out who murdered her loved ones. Injured in the flames, she takes six months to recuperate. But then she comes back “from the dead” disguised as a maid. She obtains a job in Lord Underwood’s home. He and her father were scientific partners and she suspects that Underwood had a hand in her family’s demise. But as she works incognito, she comes to realize that Lord Underwood is a wonderful man and not the murderer she seeks. “Lord Underwood was even more handsome than she remembered. His dark hair lay in waves, longer than fashionable, but neatly kept. The strong lines of his jaw were shadowed by a days’ worth of stubble. It lent him a roguish air. Her breath caught. From his dark, penetrating gaze to the soft smile haunting his lips, Adele found herself mystified by the man before her.”
I truly enjoyed this book. It unfolded in ways I didn’t expect and has a wonderful ending. I highly recommend it.
