Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke of Kielder's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul. But the Duke's steely determination to protect his heart at all costs is challenged by his growing attachment to his lovely and gentle bride--Persephone Lancaster.
Seeking Persephone is book one in the Lancaster Family Romance series by Sarah Eden. Eden writes sweet Regency era romances and some contemporary too. But as I have long wished for the world of Austen, I decided to read some of her works. I have not been disappointed. Eden spins a deep and psychologically complex story with characters that are complicated and often flawed. In Seeking Persephone, a little boy’s view and misjudgment of his worldunfortunately doesn’t change as he grows into manhood. Eden’s portrayal of the hero the Duke of Keilder, Adam Boyce is masterful. He is a tortured soul who still carries the wounds of a traumatic childhood and those traumas are vividly portrayed upon his scarred face. Adam is faced with the reality of his legacy going to another less deserving man if he doesn’t marry and produce an heir. But who would join herself to such a flawed and hardened person? Enter Persephone the heroine. Persephone is a wonderfully sweet and gentle woman who sacrifices herself for her family in their hour of need. She agrees to marry the dark and tortured Duke. At first I struggled with the pace of the book. This story is a deep and slow build. There is no quick transformation in any character and so being immature and impatient I almost quit halfway through. I’m glad I persevered. Seeking Persephone is a true treasure. This is a sweet romance with only a few kisses but there is romantic tension. It just comes later than I am used to. A definite must read.
