Some fight for love. Others risk everything to defend it…

A courageous spinster…

Purity Mayfield knows her place in society. A governess with no prospects for marriage, she’s built her life around hard work and quiet determination. But when she discovers a young girl being mistreated by her cruel caregiver, Purity doesn’t hesitate to act—even if it means earning the ire of the girl’s formidable, aristocratic, and intimidating father.

A brooding earl…

Theran Rutland, Earl of Westerby, is a man consumed by duty. Widowed and fiercely protective of his daughter, he has no time for romantic notions—or the fiery accusations of an outspoken governess. Yet, when Purity’s claims uncover dark truths about his household, Theran does the unthinkable: he hires her.

A future threatened by secrets…

As Purity brings warmth and light into his daughter’s life, she begins to break through Theran’s carefully constructed walls. But just as passion starts to bloom, secrets from Purity’s past surface, and a jealous rival plots to tear them apart. With betrayal and scandal threatening to destroy everything, Purity and Theran must decide—will they risk their hearts to fight for love, or let the past dictate their future?

His One And Only Lady is book four in the Daughters of Desire Scandalous Ladies series by Collette Cameron. I think this is one of my favorite books by Cameron. This story is fairly short, but within its pages are characters of great depth and development. The pace makes it hard to walk away from. I liked the romantic tension between Theran and the spinster Purity. One of my favorite characters is the villain – Athena Sommerville. She’s a spoiled beauty who doesn’t mind persecuting the heroine. I loved to hate her. There is also a child in this book. Normally, I’m not a fan of kids in romances. I read to escape them. But Cameron does a masterful job developing the character of Bernadine – Theran’s small daughter. She is lovable and adorable. I truly enjoyed this story.
